2019 Mazda CX-9 vs 2019 Honda Pilot

2019 Mazda CX-9 Exterior Passenger Side Front Angle vs 2019 Honda Pilot Exterior Driver Side Front Profile

The largest model on the Mazda lineup, the CX-9 has been turning heads for over a decade. Back in 2016, it entered its second generation to introduce a sleeker, more sophisticated design than the first generation had to offer, and it’s been even more attractive in the years that followed. Now for the 2019 model year, it delivers even more, adding factory-equipped Apple CarPlay & Android Auto features in addition to suspension refinements and greater sound suppression.

With all these updates in mind, wanted to see how the crossover measures up to one of its biggest competitors, so we’ve decided to pit the 2019 Mazda CX-9 vs 2019 Honda Pilot in a side-by-side comparison. To do so, we’ve compiled some of the most pertinent data into the table just below. One glance shows you exactly where each vehicle triumphs, and where its competitor lacks.

2019 Mazda CX-9

Vs

2019 Honda Pilot

22 mpg City Fuel Efficiency 19 mpg
28 mpg Highway Fuel Efficiency 27 mpg
227 HP / 310 lb-ft. Power Ratings 280 HP / 262 lb-ft.
14.4 cu. ft. Cargo Capacity 16.5 cu. ft.

Advantages of the 2019 CX-9

Starting at the top of the table, we looked first at fuel efficiency, one of the most important specifications regardless of segment or class. When driving through the city streets, the CX-9 will get three extra miles to the gallon, but only one on the highway. Either way, these numbers will lead to some saving at the gas station with time, though nothing mind-blowing.

Power is up in the air, as the third row depicts. On one hand, the Honda Pilot delivers an extra 53 horsepower, which is a pretty substantial amount. On the other hand, the CX-9 offers an extra 48 pound-feet of torque, also a hefty number. Horsepower generally translates more directly, so unfortunately we’ll give the nod to the Pilot here, but the advantage isn’t substantial.

We cannot, however, argue with the Pilots extra 2.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. Again, perhaps not a mind-blowing advantage, but that is a decent amount of extra space.
